Bahia Ballena Doctors
ONE STOP SHOP!
Bahia Ballena Doctors is a one-stop-shop for all your General Practitioner needs as well as aesthetic rejuvenation including minimally invasive procedures. Dra Monica Alfaro has been practicing medicine in our local area since 2010 – first at Hotel Cuna del Angel between Uvita and Dominical and, since 2021, right in Ojochal’s Plaza Ventanas. She is well-regarded in our community and international circles, often treating visitors from abroad.
THE RPACTICE
As a General Practitioner, Dra Alfaro offers wide-ranging care, from general checkups, to treatments and referrals, to emergency medical attention. Area residents and families, both Costa Rican and expats, entrust their care to Dra Alfaro. In addition, tourists who have become sick during their stay or need care or stitches following accidents (often surfers who get banged up by their boards) are frequent visitors, as are medical tourists who are looking for minimally invasive procedures and rejuvenation.
Her medical practice is located in Plaza Ventanas, right beside Pancito Café. The office is bright, moderns, spacious, and full of machines that look like they are from the future. There is more than enough parking up front, and plenty of restaurants and cafes to visit after your treatment!
Dra Alfaro has 13 years’ experience in non-surgical rejuvenation and assistance in plastic surgery in the practice of her father, Dr. Miguel Alfaro, a Plastic Surgeon who has been practicing since 1976 and currently works at the world-class CIMA Hospital in San Jose. She is an expert when it comes to removing years and decades from one’s face! Her office includes state-of-the art equipment utilizing the latest science and technologies.
TREATMENTS
As some of her newer treatments she offers Fractional Plasma combined with Diathermo-Contraction and Fractional Radio Frequency for skin tightening and rejuvenation, Intense Pulsed Light for treating hyperpigmentation, vascular lesions, acne, freckles, and other issues, as well as laser hair removal. Also on the list is Botox treatment, dermal fillers and fat grafting, collagen induction therapy using a Dermapen for micro-needling, anti-hair-loss consultation and treatments and chemical peels. The treatments achieve a noticeable rejuvenation of the skin including:

DRA ALFARO
Dra Alfaro was born and grew up in San José but, in 2008, she moved to our area with her husband who started as job at Hotel Cuna Del Angel. Two years later she opened her practice the same hotel. Dra Alfaro values the diversity to be found in our local area, with people from all over the world making their home in Costa Ballena. Especially, she is proud of the attitude of the local population as people who respect the land and ocean as well as each other – both locals and expats. Her family is her motivation, both immediate and her large circle of extended relatives. She enjoys her work very much, both from the medical perspective of helping her patients feel better but also from the customer service aspect as well. She loves working with people, interacting and helping in any way she can – and this is exemplified by her far-reaching reputation. Being proficient in English and Spanish, as well as commanding some Italian and French, Dra Alfaro can connect with people from all over the world.
Dra Alfaro believes that Medical Tourism is a very big part of Costa Rica’s tourism offering. She has been working in that part of the industry for almost 30 years, since her employment in her initial study field of Tourism and Hotel Management, before becoming a Physician. Her father, a Plastic Surgeon, has been tending to overseas patients since 1976, thus she has lived around the medical tourism field her entire life. Dra Alfaro believes that, if well managed, medical tourism will continue to be a good source of income for doctors and tourist businesses in Costa Rica as well as an excellent option for overseas patients.
Personally and through her practice, Dra Alfaro supports many local causes including animal rescue shelter El Refugio, Christmas for children drive, Ojochal Family Support Centre, Ojochal school, and many others. She also has a medical Spa in Tibás, San José and on occasion also works along her father, in the CIMA Hospital. If you are ever in need of medical care, or some much-needed rejuvenation, be sure to give Dra Alfaro a call!
