Our Global Neighbors & Antipodes

Have you ever wondered what lies on the antipode (opposite side of the globe) of Ojochal? Or which towns and cities share our lines of latitude or longitude? Let’s take a fascinating look at the diverse global places that have a connection to our little corner of paradise.

🌎 ANTIPODES

An antipode is the point on Earth that lies directly opposite another location. These points connect via a line through the planet’s center. This means if you could dig a tunnel straight down from one spot, you would emerge at its antipode on the other side of the globe. Because most of Earth’s surface is ocean, many land areas have antipodes in the sea. The term comes from the Greek roots anti- (“opposite”) and pod- (“foot”). It reflects the idea of people standing with their feet against ours on the far side of the world.

Costa Rica’s antipode sits deep in the Indian Ocean. It is located a few hundred kilometers off the coast of Indonesia and roughly in line between the western coast of Australia and Sri Lanka, in the general vicinity of Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

👀 LATITUDE BUDDIES

One intriguing way to connect places across the globe is by tracing lines of latitude. These horizontal lines, known as parallels, circle the Earth and mark equal distances north or south of the equator. This is a fun way to discover other cities that share the same parallel, often revealing surprising geographic relationships. While climate and culture may differ due to local conditions, these cities experience similar daylight patterns and seasonal rhythms.

Let’s visit our Latitude Buddies, located at Ojochal’s approximate 9 .09 Degrees North Latitude. This line appears as the black line in the above map. We will start in Ojochal and move to the East, crossing three continents. We also move through very diverse climates ranging from Tropical Rainforest to Arid Desert and even a touch of frigid Polar areas as we pass over the peaks of Colombian Andes. Let’s go!

🌎WHAT ABOUT LONGITUDE BUDDIES?

We can go north and see which towns & cities share Ojochal’s longitude. We cannot go south as there is nothing between Ojochal and the Antarctic. Well, unless you count Drake Bay, the wilds of Corcovado and the famous Playa Sirena!

Starting in Ojochal, let’s move towards the North Pole and explore. Moving this way, the temperatures drop as we leave the tropics behind, ande specially as we pass though northern Florida. We finish in the cold & arid wastelands of northern Canada – lands that hold a beauty of their own.
